James Garrison, founder of New York City-based Garrison Architects, is currently leading a unique design concept for a new Staten Island Animal Care Center.
The care center will be made entirely of glass with a steel frame, allowing natural light to flow through the building, creating a more natural environment for the animals and potential adopters.
A majority of animal shelters are windowless, bland buildings that always seems to be left disheveled and cramped. The adoption process then becomes unappealing and stressful not only for the animals but their caretakers and for the those who will potentially adopt.
The full-glass walls mimic the open setting found in nature. Typically animal shelters place 20 cats and dogs into one room, creating tension between the animals. Staten Island Care Center wants to avoid this by having a smaller number of cats and dogs share a room.
The Staten Island Care Center’s original approach will provide maximum comfort for the animals.
