Brett Jacobson, CEO of Lottolotto, a client of Los Angeles tech public relations firm PMBC Group, recently shared his entrepreneurial journey with WeWork Magazine. WeWork is a platform that empowers small businesses, whose members are thinkers, leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators.
Before Jacobson founded Lottolotto, a free app that lets lottery players quickly and easily check the results for every U.S. lottery, he helmed several successful companies in a variety of industries, beginning at a very young age, when he was inspired by necessity to be prosperous.
After his Bar Mitzvah, the rite of passage Jewish boys experience at 13-yers-old, Jacobson was counting his $17,230 in gifts when his father took away the money.
“Your Bar Mitzvah cost $38,000. You owe me $20,770 at 12%. You’re a man now. You pay your own way. You also owe $50 a week in rent. Don’t pay, and there’ll be consequences.”
Quickly Jacobson thought of ways to make an income to pay back his father. He went from selling gift certificates, at a discounted price, to approaching a neighbor, who was a pool manufacturer, with a proposition to sell pool chemicals door-to-door for him.
Just like that, Jacobson had his first deal and the business became so successful that he sold it for $100,000 at the age of 14.
He is now a seasoned entrepreneur with over 20 years’ experience in launching successful businesses in the consumer goods, fine arts, publishing, intellectual property, banking and technology industries.
