SideChef, a client of Los Angeles-based tech and app public relations firm PMBC, was recently featured on Entrepreneur Magazine by Carly Okyle. The article highlights how SideChef turned into a booming business from a simple idea that Kevin Yu, founder and CEO, had when he was cooking.
Yu came up with the idea of a step-by-step cooking app when he attempted to cook a three-course meal for his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day. While running YouTube tutorials, timing specific steps and adding ingredients all at the same time, Yu was left with a big mess. A former employee of Blizzard Entertainment, Yu put his gaming skills to use for an all-encompassing cooking app.
Yu launched SideChef in September 2014 and within weeks the app rocketed into the iTunes Stores’ Top 10 Food & Drinks apps. SideChef’s success is due to its unique features like audio command and voice recognition technology, automatic timers and measurement conversions that revolutionized the cooking process. The app guides users through each step of a recipe with videos, photos and audio cues, making it a must-have for cooks of all levels. SideChef recently raised $1 million in funding and Yu soon plans to monetize the app with premium add-ons like grocery delivery, to make cooking an even easier process.
Okyle specifically points out that SideChef appeals to both women and men, with a 50/50 gender split among users. She says the app is perfect for individuals, groups and even dates who want like to enjoy cooking and eating the perfect meal together. Okyle finishes with an end note saying that SideChef is the digital assistant every good chef needs in the kitchen.
