Sherman Oaks is establishing itself as a growing town in the San Fernando Valley that is an affordable place to live with the attraction of multiple restaurants and bars opening on Ventura Boulevard. As featured in Things to Do in LA, the newest addition to the Boulevard is The One Up, a new restaurant, bar and arcade featuring classic arcade games from the 80s. The One Up is a client of Los Angeles public relations firm PMBC Group.
The idea behind The One Up, which opened September 26, came from two friends who have experience in video game development and real estate. They decided to bring the video game world and the bar scene together and mesh them into The One Up.
It all started for Murphy Michaels, one of the co-owners, when he was just a child spending time with his grandfather.
“My grandfather had a bar when I was kid, and I would hang out there when I visited him. My career has been developing video games, so about 10 years ago I got this idea. My friend and business partner, Ken, also dabbled in games years ago, so when I talked to him about the idea, he loved it. Several ‘barcades’ have popped up across the country and they are very successful.”
Opening night was a huge success for The One Up — even better than Michaels expected. When asked how the evening went, he replied, “Insane! We were at capacity within an hour of opening.”
The One Up has no signs of slowing down as people of all social groups flock to this new bar which has 15 arcades offering over 400 80’s style arcade games that are free to play. Mix in the small tapas menu, which features a melting pot of traditional recipes with a unique twist and the craft cocktails, and guests are guaranteed a fun evening!
