We are in an age when the amount of social media buzz surrounding a person, show, or product can really tell us how popular, or unpopular, an item can be.
Even before the 56th Annual Grammy Awards aired last night, the social media sphere was full of predictions about who would win, who would be the best dressed, and which performance would blow them away.
Google, Yahoo!, Shazam and Spotify used data from the social media action to try to compile a list of which nominees held the most interest from their users to try and predict the night’s winners.
Two of the predictions didn’t seem to add up. For album of the year, predictions from social media traction and by number of times songs were played showed that Taylor Swift’s “Red” and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “The Heist” should be crowned winners, and for record of the year Robin Thick & Pharrell’s Blurred Lines and Imagine Dragon’s “Radioactive” should have received the award, but Daft Punk ended up winning both album and record of the year.
Here at PMBC Group, a Los Angeles based Entertainment PR Firm, we are always interested in finding out the implications social media buzz can have on the entertainment industry.
