“It truly is the people’s water in Huntington Beach,” exclaimed Julie Leiendecker of Examiner.com in her coverage of the Vans US Open surfing competition in Huntington Beach. The reporter highlighted official water sponsor of the event, People Water, a client of Los Angeles tech public relation firm PMBC Group.
Leiendecker interviewed Blake Nyman, director of business development and social missions for People Water, about the company and its unique structure, as a cause-based double bottom line company that promises to give an equal amount of water for the amount of water they sell. Through its Drop for Drop Initiative, the company pledges to give an equal amount of clean water to people in need by drilling new wells, repairing existing wells or establishing water purification systems.
At the competition held July 26 through August 3, People Water was on site selling aluminum BPA free reusable bottles for $8 and other merchandise to benefit the cause. People Water also provided a refill station for competitors, spectators and beachcombers to use over the course of the seven-day competition to fill up their bottle with and stay hydrated in the heat.
In the piece, Nyman mentions that he is proud to work for a company built on the premise of having a positive impact on social issues from helping to alleviate the global water crisis to having a smaller footprint. Furthermore, Nyman is excited that more and more businesses are moving into this sphere.
People Water feels that they have a responsibility to make a positive impact on the world. More than 3.4 million people die each year from water, sanitation, and hygiene-related causes and every 21 seconds, a child dies from a water-related illness. Everyone needs clean water, but not every has access to it. To date, People Water has provided more than 4.8 million gallons of clean water to those in need through its projects in Ghana, Haiti, India and Nicaragua.
